Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 08/24/09

Hard to believe but we didn't have one trip this weekend but we got out this morning.  We caught a few live baits but they weren't biting good so we moved on to trolling.  We caught a couple of bonito as soon as we got the baits out, then we got a few barracuda, then some kingfish.  We missed a few fish but had more than a normal amount of cut offs.  After catching some fish we decided to try for a shark but no luck with that so we headed back to the dock.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 08/21/09

No trips for the past couple of days but we had an all day today.  We started the trip catching live ballyhoo and speedos.  Then we went to where we wanted to be and put them out.  We caught a couple of kingfish on the downrigger bait, two bonito and jumped off a sailfish.  As we were fighting the bonito another one came up with it so we wound one of the rigger baits in and the other one ate it.  We ran out of speedos so we decided to troll for more kingfish.  It took less than an hour of trolling to fill our limit of kingfish and we still had some time left so we tried some snapper fishing.  We caught some yellowtail snapper and missed a few more before heading in.

We had two trips today thanks to rescheduling.  The first trip was supposed to go tomorrow morning but the weather is not going to be good so they moved it to this morning.  We headed out caught some live baits so that the kids could catch something.  After that we started trolling and caught three kingfish before they started not feeling good.  On the way back we fished a couple of spots and lost a nice barracuda before returning to the dock.  We headed out in the afternoon with a family of four.  We went right to trolling but it took a little while to get the first bite.  We caught three bonito and missed a few more bites before trying wreck fishing.  We dropped on a wreck a few times and got chopped off by some kind of toothy critter once.  We tried a spot on the way in but didn't get a bite there so we headed to the dock.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 08/17/09

We had six people from Venezuela on an afternoon trip today.  As soon as we got the baits in the water we got bites.  We missed a lot of fish and had one get eaten off by something.  We ended the trip a little early because the younger ones were not feeling good but we did manage to get three kingfish in the boat.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 08/16/09

We didn't get out yesterday but we weren't too upset about it because it was nasty weather all day.  Today we had a morning trip with four people.  The fishing started out pretty slow for everybody.  We trolled around for a while before I called someone that was catching a few fish.  We went to the area and depth that they were at and started getting bites.  We ended up with four kingfish in the box and lost four others on the leader, one of them got eaten by something but we couldn't tell what it was.  We also released a few small barracuda.  A couple of the customers weren't feeling too good so we ended up heading in about an hour early.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 08/14/09

We had six guys on an all day charter today.  They were not very interested in catching kingfish and bonito so we caught some live ballyhoo and headed offshore in search of mahis.  We got to the blue water about seven miles out and started looking for a weed line or debris.  We kept heading out but didn't see anything to fish to.  We got to the sword grounds and made a couple of day drops but no bites there.  We started working our way back and finally found a small tree floating.  We stopped on that and caught two mahi and a wahoo.  We worked the area but didn't get any more bites.  They had a good time just being out on the water despite the slow fishing.  I am sure we would have caught a lot more fish if we had stayed inshore, but they wanted to go mahi fishing.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 08/10/09

Sorry for not writing anything lately I just haven't had the time.  We have been busy and when we aren't fishing we are working on the boat.  We have been catching the kingfish and bonito pretty good.  We caught a big wahoo one day before the full moon.  There have also been some barracuda and amberjack around some of the wrecks.  The mahi-mahi have not been around but there were a few caught today.  We have an all day trip on friday so I will let you know what happens on that.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 07/30/09

We had four people on an afternoon trip today.  The boats that got out this morning came in with a bunch of kingfish so we went right to trolling when we got to the reef.  We caught four kingfish and one bonito pretty quickly then it seemed like the fish just shut off.  We trolled for a little longer then stopped and caught some bait.  We went to a wreck and made three drops but didn't get any bites.  We tried for a barracuda on the way in but no bites there either so we headed back.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 07/28/09

We had five guys on an eight hour trip today.  We were originally thinking of going offshore to look for some mahi-mahi with them but I wasn't hearing much going on out there so we started trolling the reef.  The fishing was a little slower than it was a couple of days ago.  We caught a few bonito then we found some kingfish.  After putting some fish in the box we decided to go for something bigger.  We caught some live ballyhoo and fished them for an hour without any bites.  We went to a wreck and caught some small bonito then rigged them up and fished around a couple of wrecks but didn't get any bites there either.  We ended up going back to trolling and catching a couple more kingfish and bonito before heading back to the dock.  The guys had a good time and want to try it again when the mahi are around.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 07/26/09

We has three fathers and their sons with us on a morning trip today.  We got a late start because when we backed in the slip yesterday afternoon I got an old rope caught on the port prop and had to go swimming to get it off this morning.  When we finally got out most of the other boats were already fishing and talking on the radio.  It sounded like fishing was slow.  We tried to catch bait but they didn't come up so we went trolling.  We started trolling around in circles south of the port.  On the first circle we caught a kingfish.  Second circle produced two more kingfish.  The fourth circle and two bonito.  Fishing wasn't as slow as it was sounding on the radio for us.  We continued trolling the rest of the trip and ended up catching nine kingfish and four bonito before heading in.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 07/25/09

We had two trips today.  We had a family of six on the morning trip.  We started out catching bait then went trolling.  The kingfish and bonito were not biting as good as they have been.  We caught one kingfish and five bonito then went to one of the wrecks.  We missed a fish on the first drop then caught an amberjack on the second drop before heading in to get our afternoon trip.  The afternoon trip was three people.  The father and son were from Brazil and they didn't speak English very well so he brought his nephew to translate.  We started this trip trolling with a different result than the morning.  The kingfish and bonito started biting good again.  There were a few wahoo caught this morning so, when we caught a smaller bonito, we rigged it up and slow trolled it hoping for a big bite.  We got a bite on it but the fish missed the hook and chopped the tail off.  We went to a wreck and had the same result as this morning missing one bite and catching a nice amberjack.  We went back to trolling to finish the trip and caught some more kingfish and bonito before heading in.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 07/24/09

We had a family of four on a morning charter today.  We started the trip catching bait then went trolling.  As soon as we got the first two baits in the water we had a kingfish and a bonito on.  In the boat with them and back out with the baits and two more fish on.  We caught eight bonito and seven kingfish before trying our luck at shark fishing.  We did that for about an hour with no bites then headed back to the dock with another happy family.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 07/23/09

We had six people on a morning charter today.  We started the trip trolling.  The kingfish and bonito were biting good but the customers wanted to try for something big.  They had already caught most of the game fish that we get here but never tried shark fishing.  We caught enough kingfish and bonito to use for bait then went shark fishing.  We shark fished for over an hour before something started chewing on the bottom bait.  We watched the rod twitch for a minute then the line went slack.  We wound on the reel and ran the boat ahead but whatever it was didn't get the hook.  We set the mid bait down to the bottom to see if the fish might find it and try again but no such luck so we headed back to the dock.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 07/21/09

We had three guys on a morning trip today.  On the way out we heard a couple of the other boats saying that the bite was slower than the last few days.  We got our baits out and the bonito started biting pretty good.  For the most part the bonito kept us busy but we weren't getting any kingfish.  We kept trolling south and all of a sudden the we got into the kingfish.  We kept catching them until we got our limit.  There was a nice looking edge offshore of us so we trolled that until it was time to go back.  The customers were really happy with the day.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 07/20/09

We had a father and son from Georgia out with us this morning.  The conditions were a little different than they have been for the past week.  There has been some north current but it was a lot stronger today than it has been.  We went right to trolling and started getting bites pretty quickly.  The bonito were biting good and the customers were having fun catching them.  We caught two kingfish as well as the bonito.  The kingfish were a lot bigger than the ones we have been catching so only getting two of them was like catching six of the regular size kingfish.  We went to a couple of wrecks but didn't get any bites there.  We saw a few sailfish free jumping and had one come up and look at one of the live baits we had out but it didn't eat.  We started heading back and saw a few more sailfish.  We tried to get one to bite but still no luck with that so we headed in.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 07/19/09

We had a father and son from Alabama on a morning charter today.  We started out trolling.  We trolled for a few minutes before we got our first bite.  The kingfish weren't biting as good as they have been the last few days but the bonito were biting good.  We caught four bonito before we got our first kingfish in the boat.  We kept trolling and ended up limiting out on kingfish and getting eight bonito.  After we limited on kingfish we went to a wreck.  We made two drops with no bites.  Then we went to another spot and caught a barracuda before heading in with two more happy customers.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 07/18/09

We had three brothers on a morning trip this morning.  We went straight to trolling.  As soon as we got the first bait set we had a kingfish on.  While we were reeling that fish in, we started setting out another bait.  Before we could get that bait set we had another kingfish on.  We got the first one in the cooler and put the bait out again.  We got the second fish in the cooler and got another one on.  The fish were biting so good that we got our limit in about an hour and had to stop fishing for them.  We went to a wreck and dropped a live bait.  As soon as the bait got to the bottom it got bit and we caught an amberjack.  We started heading back and stopped at a couple of other spots but no other fish.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 07/17/09

We had a morning trip today with five people.  Three of the guys were with us on the afternoon trip yesterday.  We went right to trolling.  We caught kingfish and bonito until we limited out on kingfish again.  We trolled out deeper looking for something different but didn't get any bites before running out of time and heading in.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 07/16/09

We had two trips today.  We had four people on the morning trip.  We started the trip trolling.  As soon as we got baits in the water we were getting bites.  The kingfish and bonito were snapping again.  We caught kingfish and bonito for a while until we got our limit of kingfish.  Then we went to try for something different.  We had a couple of live baits so we fished them and caught a nice barracuda before heading in to get our afternoon trip.  We had six people on the afternoon trip.  They wanted to try for some mahi-mahi.  We headed offshore but there were no mahis out there so we headed back to the reef to catch some fish.  We put the first bait out and caught a small blackfin tuna.  We trolled the reef and caught three kingfish.  We then went to one of the wrecks.  We dropped a live bait and missed a bite.  We reset on the wreck got another bite.  This time the fish stayed on and we caught a big almaco jack before heading back to the dock.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 07/13/09

Today we had a family of six charter us.  There was mom and dad and four kids ranging in age from 7-17.  We started the trip catching bait so that the kids got to catch a fish.  Then we went trolling and caught three bonito and a small blackfin tuna.  The fish weren't biting as good as they have been so we brought in the trolling gear and went to one of the wrecks.  The first wreck we fished had a diver getting ready to go so we fished around it until he went in the water.  As we were winding in the live baits I saw something chase one of them to the back of the boat.  I dropped the bait back and got a nice barracuda.  After that we went to a deeper wreck and dropped a bait there.  It took a few minutes but we got a big amberjack on and to the boat.  We were a little ways away from the port so on the run back we put out some heavier lures trying for a wahoo or something but didn't get anything.  Either way, everybody got a chance to catch a fish and they were all happy.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 07/12/09

We had a morning trip with three people this morning.  The kingfish and bonito were still biting good on the troll.  We caught some of them and then fished one of the wrecks and got a big barracuda.  We trolled some more and got a few more kingfish and bonito before heading back to the dock.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 07/11/09

We had a family of five on a morning charter today.  We started out trolling around the reef.  We again started getting bites almost as soon as we got the baits in the water.  Yet again the kingfish and bonito were biting everything that hit the water.  We trolled for most of the trip and caught seven kingfish, four bonito, and one remora.  We dropped a live bait on one of the wrecks but didn't get a bite.  Time was up so we headed back to the dock with another group of happy customers.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 07/10/09

We had six people on a morning charter today.  The seas were a little choppier than they have been the past month or so.  We started trolling and as soon as we got both planer lines set we had two fish on.  The first fish to the boat was a small jack of some kind.  The second fish was a bonito.  We kept trolling and catching fish.  The kingfish and bonito were biting good and we were getting steady bites from them on the planers and on the surface baits.  As we were fighting one bonito we got in a little shallower than normal.  As soon as I noticed how shallow we were I turned the boat offshore so as to not get the planer hung on the reef.  As we were clearing the reef we got a bite on the planer.  We wound it up and, to our surprise, we caught a 10# mutton snapper.  We caught a few more fish then went to drop on a wreck.  Unfortunately, the customers were starting to not feel so good and made the call to start heading back, so we wound the bait in and made our way home.  Despite some minor sea-sickness, they still had a great time and want to go again the next time they are in town.  Maybe some motion sickness pills will be in order before their next trip.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 07/09/09

We had another regular with his friends and family on a morning trip today.  We trolled the whole trip and had steady kingfish and bonito action.  We missed a lot of fish but caught enough to make everybody happy.  We ended up with six kingfish, seven bonito, one cero mackerel, and a triggerfish.  It's always nice to have happy customers.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 07/08/09

We had an afternoon trip today with two of our regular customers.  We started the trip trolling and caught some kingfish and a few bonito.  We then tried some wreck fishing.  No luck around the wrecks but we did see a mahi.  We couln't get the mahi to eat a bait so when we started running to the next wreck we put out a couple of baits and caught one small mahi.  Not much luck on the other wrecks and time was up so we headed in.
