Captain Wally's Fishing Report
04/28/09 fishing report
We picked up a late trip today. Two
people pulled into the dock about 5:30 this afternoon wanting to go
fishing. We got the boat ready and left the dock around 6:00. We
got some of the goggle eyes we had in the bait pen and went fishing.
We started out trolling and caught four kingfish. Then we set two
kites and some shark baits. Shortly after the sun went down we got a
bite on one of the gogs. We started fighting the fish as it swam
toward the boat. The spreader lights were on and when the fish got to
the edge of the lights if started fighting a lot more. It was a nice
mahi-mahi. We had to do some maneuvering with the rod as the fish swam
over and under and around the other lines we had in the water. We
finally got it into the boat then waited for a shark bite. No luck
with that tonight but still a good spur of the moment trip.
04/27/09 fishing report
We ended up getting an afternoon trip
today. We had two people from Canada with us. We trolled the
whole trip and caught seven kingfish. We missed some small mahis and
also had a sailfish on for a little while, but we did not catch
it.
04/26/09 fishing report
We ended up having two trips again today. We had five people on the
morning trip. We started the trip trolling and caught about 10
kingfish, 6 mahis, and a nice wahoo. Then we went kite fishing and
hooked a sailfish pretty quickly. As we were fighting the sailfish we
got another bite, but we did not see what it was. We continued to
fight the sailfish until we got it to the boat. We measured, took
pictures, tagged and released the sailfish. Then we went after the
other fish. We fought it for a while before getting it close enough to
see that it was a shark. We got the leader and pulled the hook after
getting a couple of pictures. On the afternoon trip we had two
people. We started trolling and caught 6 kingfish. We then went
kite fishing again and caught a nice sailfish. We got the fish to the
boat took pictures, measured, tagged and released the sailfish. We
kite fished for a little while longer then went back to the dock.
04/25/09 fishing report
We had two trips again today. On the
morning trip we had six guys celebrating a bachelor party trip. The
seas were fairly rough, so we bought goggle eyes and went straight to kite
fishing. We had three gogs and one shark bait on the kites and one
deep shark bait. We saw a couple of small sharks, but none big enough
to eat the shark bait. As we were clearing the kites to go trolling a
big hammerhead shark same in on one of the gogs, we pulled it away from it
because it was on a mono leader. We got the shark bait in front of it
and missed it on the first bite. It came back up on the bait again and
this time it found the hooks. It never really made the big run that
hammerheads usually do, instead it stayed un the surface. The fight
did not last long, but the fish was still green when we got it to the
boat. We tried leadering it up several times, and eventually got it
close enough for pictures, but it made another run and broke the line.
We still had some time left, so we went trolling. There were some
kingfish biting but, before we could get to them, we got a bite on the high
line. We thought it was a small mahi but after feeding it for a second
and hooking it, up jumped a sailfish. We fought that fish for a little
while before getting the leader releasing it. We caught both of our
fish in the last hour of the trip, then we went back in to pick up our
afternoon trip. The afternoon trip we had four people. It was
still pretty rough. We started trolling and caught a mahi in the first
15 minutes. We continued to troll and missed a few more bites.
Then we trolled further offshore and caught another mahi. We continued
to troll and missed a few other fish before heading back to the dock.
04/24/09 fishing report
We had two trips today. Our morning trip
was supposed to be a four hour, but the busses were running late and got the
people there an hour late. We trolled the whole trip and caught one
bonito, one kingfish, and six mahis. We also missed a few other
bites. The afternoon trip was supposed to be a six hour trip, but the
customers showed up late and then got sick after catching a hammerhead
shark, so we came in three hours early.
We had a corporate convention trip today. We had six
customers from various parts of the world. We started out trying to
catch bait, but they were not biting so we moved on to trolling. We
trolled for a while without a bite then caught three kingfish on at the same
time. While we were trolling a couple of the guys were shouting about
shark fishing, so we went to do that. We got three baits out and
waited for the bite. It did not take long before the long balloon
started coming towards the boat. We put the boat in gear and ran ahead
to get the line tight. When the line came tight the fish made a long,
hard, fast run. We fought the fish for over an hour before getting it
to the boat. Again we brought the fish up to the boat took pictures,
measurements, removed the hooks, and tagged and released another big
hammerhead shark. We still had some time left on the trip so we went
back to trolling. We caught two more kingfish and one spanish mackerel
before the trip was over.
04/22/09 fishing report
Today we had a mom and her so and daughter from Vermont. We started
the trip catching bait then went trolling. We caught a couple of
kingfish and missed a few other fish. They wanted to catch something
big so we went shark fishing after trolling. It took a while to get a
bite but we finally got a big hammerhead shark on the line. We fought
it for over an hour before getting it to the boat. We leadered it up
to the side of the boat took a measurement, removed the hooks, took some
pictures, tagged and released the fish. Then we went to one of the
wrecks and caught a nice size amberjack. All in all it was a great day
of fishing.
04/20/09 fishing report
We picked up three people on a shared charter this afternoon. The
boats that went out in the morning brought back some kingfish and mahis so
we were looking forward to catching some fish. We began the trip
trolling. We missed a few small mahis and a couple of kingfish
bites. After an hour of no fish we decided to try shark fishing.
We set up our spread of baits and had some more small mahis try to eat our
live baits, but they were not big enough to swallow them. Just about
the time we were going to give up on the sharks, the bottom rod bent
over. We fought the fish for an hour before getting it to the boat, it
was a hammerhead shark. We pulled the fish up got a measurement, took
pictures, removed the hooks, tagged and released the shark. By the
time we finished with the shark it was time to go back.
04/19/09 fishing report
Today we had a father and his son and daughter. We started the trip
trolling and caught eight kingfish and a couple of bonito. We then
went shark fishing. After about a half hour we got a bite on one of
the shark baits. We fought the fish for about an hour before getting
the leader, it was a hammerhead shark. We pulled the shark close to
the boat, got a measurement, took some pictures, removed the hooks we could,
then tagged and released the shark. It nice to see the sharks starting
to show up, usually they are here earlier in the year.
04/18/09 fishing report
We had two trips again today. On the morning trip we had five
people that were repeat customers. We went right to trolling because
they wanted to catch something to eat. It did not take long before we
had our first mahi-mahi bite. We trolled the whole trip and
consistently kept catching the mahis. The afternoon trip was a father
and his two sons. We trolled for a little while and caught a
barracuda. We continued to troll, but with no bites, we gave up on
that and tried shark fishing. We did not get any shark bites, but we
did miss a couple of small mahis and something else that chopped our bait to
pieces. We trolled for a little bit more to end the trip and missed a
couple of bites, but no more fish.
04/17/09 fishing report
Today we had an all day four boat trip from
Schell's/Grain Belt Brewery. We had five people with us. We
started the trip trolling and caught two bonito and six kingfish and missed
a few more bites. We then ran south and kite fished. We caught
two mahis and missed a few more. Then we ran further south and reset
the kites. We caught a couple more mahis and missed a sailfish.
While we were putting the baits back out we missed another sailfish then
caught another mahi. We wanted to do some other types fishing so we
gave up on kite fishing and started running closer to home to try some shark
fishing. On the run back we saw what looked like a ball of bait or a
big turtle. We stopped and turned around on it to see if there were
any fish around it. When we got close to it, it changed color from
black to red. On a closer look we realized that it was a ball of
squid. I got the cast net out and, when we got with in range, I threw
the net. We then shark fished for a little while, but the guys had to
be back to get ready for dinner. After we got back to the dock I got
all of the squid out of the cooler and counted that we had 116 of
them. I asked some of the other captains that have been around for a
while if they had ever seen a squid ball before. Most of them had not
but one of them had and, when I showed him one of them he told me they were
Ilex squid. Interesting to see them here, usually they are up in the
Carolinas is what he said.
04/16/09 fishing report
This afternoon we had a family of five from New
York. We tried bait fishing but they were not biting good and we only
caught a couple. Then we went trolling trying to catch kingfish,
bonito, mahi-mahi, etc. We missed a few bites but caught two small
mahis and one cero mackerel. Then we went wreck fishing. The
first two wrecks did not produce anything. On the third wreck we tried
we missed one fish, redropped and got another bite. We ended up
fighting a large amberjack after a 30 minute fight for the 11 year old we
had on the boat.
04/15/09 fishing report
we had an afternoon trip again today. We started out catching
speedos for bait. We then trolled for a little while and caught a
couple of kingfish. The customers wanted to catch something big so we
went shark fishing. We had the baits out for about 20 minutes ang got
a bite but it did not get hooked. We reset the baits and sat for
another 20 minutes and got another bite. We fought the fish for an
hour or so before seeing it. We got the leader and brought a
hammerhead shark to the side of the boat. After holding it on the
leader for pictures, measurements, and tagging we released the shark.
We tried for another shark but did not get any more bites. While shark
fishing we also jumped off a barracuda and a couple of smaller mahi-mahi.
04/14/09 fishing report
We started out catching bait again today. We then trolled for a
while. Trolling was slow, and we only missed one bite. Then we went
wreck fishing. On the first wreck we caught a big amberjack. We
then fished two other wrecks before catching another jack. We slow
trolled live baits around some other wrecks and caught two big kingfish to
end the trip.
04/13/09 fishing report
We had three parties of two sharing the boat
this afternoon. We started the trip catching speedos. Some
of the other boats were catching kingfish trolling so we tried slow trolling
the speedos. We missed two or three bites then went trolling. We
caught three kingfish, two bonito, and one mahi-mahi. We missed a few
other fish the went wreck fishing. We tried four wrecks before getting
a bite. We missed a fish then caught a bluefish and a nice almico
jack, similar to an amberjack, before giong back.
04/12/09 fishing report
Happy Easter! We had an afternoon trip today. We caught some
bait then went shark fishing. We had a bite but it did not stay
connected. We then went wreck fishing and caught a bluefish and an
amberjack. The customers were having fun so they asked to stay out for
longer. We then slow trolled live bait and caught four nice size
kingfish before going back in.
04/11/09
Two trips again today. The morning trip was more repeat
customers. We caught speedos and slow trolled them for most of the
trip. We missed a couple of fish before hooking a big kingfish.
We were fishing monofilament leaders so I did not think that we would
actually catch it. After fighting it for 20 minutes we got it to the
boat. It made a few more runs when it was close But we finally got the
gaff into it. It weighed 38 pounds. Then we went to a wreck and
caught an amberjack before heading in. The afternoon trip started the
same with bait fishing. We trolled and caught two kingfish. We
then went wreck fishing again and caught another amberjack and a 20 pound
bluefish (uncommon for this area). We then slow trolled the speedos
again. We missed a couple of fish and had a big hammerhead shark on
for 10 minutes. It cut the leader but we ended up catching a 25 pound
kingfish then headed home.
04/10/09 fishing report
We again had two trips today. On the first trip we had a father and
his two sons. We started out trolling and caught two bonito and one
kingfish. We were hearing some of the other boats catching sailfish so
we went kite fishing. We did that for a couple of hours. We had
a couple of bites from unknown fish but did not see any sails. On the
afternoon trip we had five guys from Nevada, some of which had fished us
before. We went right to kite fishing because they wanted to catch a
sailfish. We did that for a couple hours again on that trip but still
had no luck. We went wreck fishing after that and missed a couple of
fish before we caught a big amberjack. We then trolled for an hour and
missed a couple of fish on the deep baits. Hopefully our luck will be
better tomorrow.
04/09/09 fishing report
We had two trips again today. The morning trip we took
out some friends of mine that work in the boatyard. We got a late
start because I had to renew a license. We left the dock around 9:00
and went to catch bait. The speedos had already been hit by every
other boat and were not biting. Luckily, we had some left over bait
from yesterday. They wanted to try to catch a sailfish because none of
them have ever caught one. We slow trolled them the whole trip.
We had a couple of sailfish come up and look at the baits but did not want
to eat them. Frustrating! I heard from a boat from the next
inlet south of us that they were biting good down there, but it was too late
to make that run and we went back to pick up our next trip. On that
trip we made a long run to the south in the hopes of getting into the
sailfish. We fished a wreck before trying for sails and caught a nice
amberjack. The wind had picked up a little from the morning so we kite
fished for a couple of hours. We did not get any bites doing that so
we ended the trip trolling and caught a couple of bonito.
04/08/09 fishing report
We stretched the day today pretty long. We started with an eight
hour trip at 7:00. There were four customers from New York on the
boat. We started catching speedos. Then we went kite
fishing. We had one saifish eat a bait but it did not stay on the
line. After doing that for an hour or so we slow trolled the speedos.
We caught a sailfish and missed another one doing this. Then we went
shark fishing for an hour and a half. No bites doing that and we were
out of time so we went to pick up our next trip. We started the trip
catching speedos because there were kids on the boat. We then went
shark fishing but did not get any bites again. Then we fished a
couple of wrecks. No bites on the first wreck but on the second wreck
we got a solid bite but the fish managed to break us off in the wreck.
The sun was going down and it was time to come home.
04/07/09 fishing report
We had two trips today. On the morning trip we caught two sailfish
and a cobia. The sailfish each fought for about 30 minutes. On
the afternoon trip we also caught two sailfish and lost two more as
well. One of the fish we lost got cut off by another boat when it ran
over the line. The other one just did not stay on the hook. They
were both part of a triple hook up. The sailfish that we caught fought
for about 30 minutes.
04/05/09 fishing report
Today we had a six hour charter. We
trolled for a little while them tried shark fishing. We did not get
any bites doing that so we went wreck fishing and caught a big
amberjack. We then went kite fishing and had a couple of kingfish
bites almost instantly. Then a sailfish ate one of the baits. We
hooked it and it fought for almost an hour. We finally got it to the
boat took some photos tagged it and released it.
04/04/09 fishing report
Well, after sitting in for three days, it was nice to finally get out
again. On our morning trip we caught three bonito and then went shark
fishing with no luck. The afternoon trip started with catching
speedos for bait. We then slow trolled the speedos. It didn't
take long before we got a bite on the high line, but the line got hung up in
the clip and we lost the bait. I immediately dropped back another bait
to where the fish was and got bit. It took a few tries but we
eventually hooked a sailfish. It took about 30 minutes before we got
the fish to the boat. We took a measurement, removed the hook, tagged
the fish and released it. We continued to slow troll but didn't get
any more bites. We wreck fished on the way home but didn't get
anything else.
03/31/09 fishing report
Today we had a family and a father and son from Illinois. We stared
out catching some blue runners and speedos (bait fish). The customers
were more interested in catching something big so we then went shark
fishing. We did that for an hour or so and had one bite that did not
stay on. We put some fresh baits back out trying for another
bite. After a little while without a bite we decided to try something
different. We caught some more bait (small bonito), then went wreck
fishing. On the first wreck we caught a big amberjack. It was a
good fight that took about 20-30 minutes. The customers were excited
and wanted to try for something else. We went to another wreck and had
a couple of bites and caught a barracuda. It was a pretty good trip
and the customers left happy.
03/30/09 fishing report
Today we had four guys from Alberta, Canada. They just got back
from a cruise and wanted to kill some time fishing. We started
trolling and caught a bonita and a kingfish. We then went shark
fishing for an hour or so but did not get a bite. After that we tried
fishing around a couple of the artificial reefs. We had a few bites
and caught another kingfish. We finished off the trip releasing a nice
sized barracuda.
03/29/09 fishing report
Today we had a group of people from Montreal, Canada. It can be
somewhat difficult to talk to people when you do not speak the same language
they do. Fortunately one of them spoke some English and we made
do. We started out catching some live baits. Then we went
trolling and caught some kingfish and bonito. After doing that for a
while the customer asked if they could catch something else. We tried
wreck fishing and caught another bonito and got broken off by something
else. We moved to a couple of other wrecks but did not have much
luck. Finally on the last wreck we fished we caught a big
barracuda. It fought pretty hard and came to the boat pretty
tired. We took the hooks out and revived the fish before releasing it
and then headed home. The customers seemed very happy, but as I said
before, it's hard to tell when you do not speak the same language.
03/27/09 fishing report
Well you could call this the tale of two trips. This morning we
headed out in not so great conditions. We had a father and son and
three of the sons friends, all of the around 15 years old or so. We
got out to the fishing grounds and set up for kite fishing. We waited
about half an hour before a sailfish ate one of the baits. We fought
the fish for about 30-40 minutes before getting it boatside for pictures and
a release. We reset the baits and waited about another hour or so when
another sailfish ate a bait. This fish fought for about 15 minutes
before coming to the boat for pictures and the release. Again we put
the baits out and waited. 20 minutes later a large barracuda eats a
bait. We fought it for 5 minutes or so but when we got it close it cut
through the leader. Then there was the afternoon trip. The seas
had calmed down considerably and we were hopeful for another good
trip. We kite fished for three hours without a bite. We tried
fishing around one of the artificial reefs with no luck. There is no
happy ending to this one. We came back skunked. That happens sometimes
I guess.
03/26/09 fishing report
Today was a good day of fishing. We had a repeat customer (Jim)
that fished with us a few months ago. Jim wanted to take his son
(Tyler) out to catch a sailfish. It was a little rough, so we trolled
to where we wanted to sailfish at and caught a couple of small mahi-mahi on
the way. We then set up for sails and within 45 minutes got one
on. Tyler (10) fought the sailfish to the boat, with a little help
from Jim, then we took pictures and released it. The fight lasted
about 30 minutes and it was Tyler's first sailfish.
03/24/09 Fishing Report
Today I am trying something new. I am going to try and do a report
for every day we fish. We had two trips today and caught some
mahi-mahi, kingfish, and an amberjack. There were also some sailfish
around.
